Logic For Investing In CNET
The old guard of Ivy Leagers is mostly out at CNET, options scandals have been cleared and the company just reported a nice quarter that brought a nice rebound to the stock. So why would you ante up? Analysts are juiced about a cyclical upturn related to PCs and video games.
Perhaps a bigger issue is that CNET remains buy-out candy for larger media companies. What's our opinion? Well we can see the buy-out looming, but we would like to see it happen soon. Long-term we actually think that CNET is under threat from the blogosphere. Until recently if Microsoft wanted to reach the biggest pool of potential Vista buyers, it didn't have many options. Now you have networks like Federated Media that are pooling blogger traffic and can compete. Moreover, its tough for a company like CNET with its fancy offices and secretary pools to compete with barebones outfits like Digg. We have to think the folks at CNET see this under way and are motivated by find a buyer soon. So bottom line, we like the stock.
