MOT Blows Quarter, Will Fire 3,500
Motorola posted a drop in fourth-quarter profit, just two weeks after the company warned Wall Street that soft handset pricing would lead to a steep earnings shortfall. MOT also let us know that it had cut prices on its RAZR phones to maintain market share - a strategy that worked but of course it saw lower margins.
MOT stock is actually up 3.85%, possibly on news of the cost cutting measures.
There is much speculation among analysts that MOT would make a good M&A target, possibly by an LBO firm. This is perhaps the best reason to hold the stock. For example, Motorola's connected-home business unit which makes set-top boxes did $980M versus analysts’ consensus expectation for $830M which may support that idea that MOT could be bought out, broken into separate parts, and have more value as separate companies.
